Niacinamide

Niacinamide is the amide form of vitamin B3 (nicotinamide), a small, water-soluble molecule produced synthetically for cosmetic use. It is one of the most rigorously studied topical actives, which is why it appears at meaningful percentages across so many K-beauty formulas. The published evidence is genuinely strong. Controlled studies support niacinamide for reducing hyperpigmentation and post-inflammatory marks (it interrupts the transfer of pigment from melanocytes to skin cells), for lowering visible sebum and pore appearance, and for reinforcing the barrier by boosting the skin's own ceramide and free-fatty-acid production, which in turn cuts water loss. Anti-redness and antioxidant effects are also documented. Most of this work sits in the 2 to 5 percent range; 10 percent and above is a high-dose choice that offers diminishing returns and more irritation risk. It suits almost everyone, but it is especially useful for oily and combination skin, enlarged-looking pores, uneven tone and dark spots, and compromised barriers. Layering is easy: niacinamide is stable and plays well with hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, retinoids and exfoliating acids. The old warning that it cannot be used with vitamin C stems from mid-century lab conditions and does not hold at the temperatures and concentrations of finished skincare, though very sensitive users may prefer to alternate to reduce any transient flushing. On safety, niacinamide is fragrance-free by nature and one of the better-tolerated actives, though high concentrations can cause a temporary warmth or flush in reactive skin. It does not feed Malassezia, so it is considered compatible with fungal-acne-prone routines. It is widely regarded as suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but as with any routine change, confirm with your clinician.
