BHA (salicylic)

BHA in skincare almost always means salicylic acid, an oil-soluble exfoliating acid derived from willow bark and related sources and produced to cosmetic grade; betaine salicylate is a gentler, salicylate-releasing relative common in K-beauty. Being oil-soluble, salicylic acid can penetrate into sebum-filled pores, which sets it apart from water-soluble AHAs. The evidence is strong for acne and congestion. Salicylic acid is well documented to exfoliate inside the pore, dissolve the debris that forms blackheads and clogs, and calm inflammation, making it a first-line active for oily, breakout-prone skin. It also improves general texture. It is best for oily and combination skin, blackheads, whiteheads and enlarged-looking pores, and blemish-prone areas. It maps to pore and oil, acne and texture concerns. Layering should be measured. Introduce it gradually and buffer with hydration, since it can be drying. Pair it with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and barrier support. Avoid combining it in the same routine with retinoids or other strong acids while acclimating, to limit irritation, and alternate instead. Daily SPF is important. On safety, salicylic acid can dry or sting, especially if overused, so hydrate around it. Because it is oil-soluble and pore-clearing, it is generally considered compatible with fungal-acne-prone skin. On pregnancy, topical low-concentration salicylic acid is widely regarded as acceptable, but leave-on or high-strength use is more debated and oral salicylates are avoided, so the responsible course is to confirm your specific product with your clinician if pregnant.
