Panthenol (B5)

Panthenol is provitamin B5, an alcohol form of pantothenic acid that converts to the active vitamin once in the skin. Produced synthetically for cosmetic use, it is a humectant and soothing agent that shows up throughout gentle, barrier-focused and post-active formulas. The evidence is reasonably solid, in the moderate-to-strong range for a supportive ingredient. Panthenol is documented to hydrate, reduce transepidermal water loss, calm irritation and support wound and barrier recovery, which is why it is a staple in products aimed at sensitive and stressed skin. Its benefits are comforting and reparative rather than transformative. It is best for sensitive, irritated, dehydrated or recovering skin, including after sun, shaving or strong actives, and for redness-prone complexions. It maps to sensitivity, dehydration and redness or rosacea-prone concerns. Layering is simple and conflict-free. Panthenol pairs beautifully with Centella, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and squalane, and is a go-to buffering companion for retinoids and exfoliating acids because it soothes without interfering. There is nothing it meaningfully conflicts with. On safety, panthenol is very well tolerated, typically fragrance-free in soothing formulas, and rarely sensitizing. It does not feed Malassezia, so it suits fungal-acne-prone routines. It is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. As with any product, confirm with your clinician if you are treating a diagnosed skin condition, but for the vast majority of people panthenol is a low-risk, comforting addition to a routine.
