Green tea
Evidence: Moderate
Antioxidant with oil-calming, soothing benefits — a classic for oily, stressed skin.
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Green tea extract comes from the leaves of Camellia sinensis and is rich in polyphenol antioxidants, most notably EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). A classic in Korean skincare (Jeju green tea is a point of pride), it is used for its antioxidant, soothing and oil-calming character.
The evidence is moderate. Green tea polyphenols have well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies, with some clinical support for calming skin, supporting photoprotection when paired with sunscreen, and modestly influencing sebum, which lines up with its popularity for oily, reactive complexions. The topical clinical evidence is encouraging but not definitive, so it is best framed as a solid supporting antioxidant.
It is best for oily, congested or stressed skin, redness-prone complexions, and anyone wanting an antioxidant layer for daily environmental defense. It maps to pore and oil, redness or rosacea-prone, and dullness concerns.
Layering is easy. Green tea pairs well with niacinamide, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and sunscreen, and works nicely as a daytime antioxidant companion. There are no notable conflicts.
On safety, green tea extract is generally well tolerated, though as a botanical it can occasionally sensitize very reactive skin, and some formulas add fragrance, so check the label. It is not a recognized Malassezia feeder. No specific pregnancy concerns are documented for topical green tea extract, and its gentle profile makes it low risk; note only that this refers to topical use, distinct from the caffeine considerations of drinking large amounts, and confirm new products with your clinician if you have specific concerns.
