Heartleaf
Evidence: Moderate
Soothing, antioxidant herb — Korea's favorite for hot, flushed, breakout-prone skin.
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Heartleaf refers to Houttuynia cordata, a leafy perennial (eoseongcho in Korean) used for centuries in Korean and East Asian folk medicine and now a signature soothing ingredient in K-beauty toners and essences. Its cosmetic interest centers on flavonoids such as quercetin and other polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
The evidence is moderate and leans on laboratory and preliminary data rather than large human trials. Extracts show antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity in vitro, which supports its use for calming hot, flushed, breakout-prone skin, but robust clinical proof of visible outcomes in finished cosmetics is limited. It is reasonable to treat it as a promising soothing botanical whose real-world benefit comes largely from a gentle, hydrating base plus mild antioxidant support.
It suits oily, reactive and acne-prone skin that runs warm and irritated, and it maps to redness and rosacea-prone concerns, sensitivity and acne. People who find niacinamide or Centella helpful often like heartleaf for the same reasons.
Layering is straightforward: heartleaf toners and essences sit early in a routine, pair well with Centella, panthenol, mugwort and hyaluronic acid, and can buffer the sting of actives. There are no notable chemical conflicts.
On safety, heartleaf is generally well tolerated, but because it is a plant extract, individual sensitivities are possible and some formulas add fragrance, so patch testing reactive skin is wise. It is not a recognized Malassezia feeder. No specific pregnancy concerns are documented for topical use, though evidence is limited, so confirm new products with your clinician.
