Ingredient guide
Vitamin C
Evidence: Strong
Antioxidant brightener. Pure L-AA is most potent but unstable; derivatives (ethyl ascorbic, ascorbyl glucoside) are gentler, slower.
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Vitamin C in skincare centers on L-ascorbic acid, the pure, biologically active form, alongside gentler derivatives such as ethyl ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside and sodium ascorbyl phosphate. It is a water-soluble antioxidant and an essential cofactor for collagen synthesis, which underpins its dual reputation for brightening and support of firmness.
The evidence is strong for L-ascorbic acid: it neutralizes free radicals, inhibits excess pigment production, and contributes to collagen formation, with studies supporting brighter, more even tone and antioxidant defense against daily environmental stress. The trade-off is stability; pure L-AA is potent but degrades with light, air and heat, and typically works best around 10 to 20 percent at a low pH. Derivatives are more stable and gentler but generally slower and less potent, an honest trade many sensitive users accept.
It is best for people addressing dullness, uneven tone, dark spots and early aging, and it suits most skin types, with derivatives better for reactive skin. It maps to dark-spot, dullness and aging concerns.
Layering is effective when done well. Vitamin C is a natural daytime partner to sunscreen, boosting antioxidant protection, and combines classically with vitamin E and ferulic acid for greater stability and effect. It coexists fine with niacinamide in modern formulas. Very sensitive users may prefer to separate high-strength L-AA from strong acids or retinoids to different times of day to limit stinging.
On safety, L-ascorbic acid can tingle or cause transient redness, and oxidized (yellow-brown) product is less effective and more irritating, so store it cool and dark. It does not feed Malassezia and is generally considered pregnancy-safe, but confirm new products with your clinician.
⚠ Can tingle; store away from light
