Tea tree

Tea tree oil is an essential oil steam-distilled from the Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia. Its main active is terpinen-4-ol, which gives it genuine antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it has a long history as a spot treatment for blemishes. The evidence is moderate and, unusually for an essential oil, includes real clinical data: studies of tea tree gel around 5 percent show meaningful reduction in acne lesions, comparable in effect to benzoyl peroxide though slower to work, with fewer immediate side effects. This is a legitimately supported acne ingredient when properly diluted. It is best for acne-prone and oily skin as a targeted or formulated treatment, for people who want a botanical alternative to harsher spot treatments. It maps to acne and pore and oil concerns. Layering should be conservative. Use tea tree in a well-formulated dilution, and pair it with soothing, hydrating ingredients like Centella, niacinamide and panthenol to offset dryness. Avoid stacking it with multiple other strong actives at once, and never apply neat, undiluted essential oil to skin. Safety is the key discussion. Tea tree is an essential oil and a recognized contact sensitizer; it can cause irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, and oxidized (old, air-exposed) oil is more sensitizing, so freshness and dilution matter and anyone with essential-oil sensitivity should avoid it. It does have antifungal activity, but it is still an irritant risk. Because essential oils carry safety questions during pregnancy, and evidence is limited, the cautious course is to avoid concentrated tea tree during pregnancy and confirm any product with your clinician.
