Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan that occurs naturally in skin, where it binds large amounts of water. In skincare it appears as hyaluronic acid or its salt sodium hyaluronate, produced by bacterial fermentation and supplied in different molecular weights so it can hydrate at the surface and, in lower-weight fractions, slightly deeper. The evidence for hydration is strong. As a humectant it demonstrably increases skin water content and improves the look of plumpness and fine surface lines while it is in place. It does not permanently restructure skin, and the plumping is a hydration effect, but that effect is real, immediate and well documented. It suits essentially every skin type and is a first-line choice for dehydration and tightness, including oily skin that needs water without oil. It maps to dehydration and dryness. Layering is easy and it is one of the most compatible ingredients in skincare, working alongside niacinamide, vitamin C, retinoids, acids, peptides and ceramides. The one practical rule is application context: apply it to damp skin and seal it with a moisturizer, because in a dry environment an unsealed humectant can draw moisture from deeper skin and leave you feeling tighter. There are no chemical conflicts. On safety, hyaluronic acid is among the gentlest actives, typically fragrance-free, and does not feed Malassezia, making it fully compatible with fungal-acne-prone routines.
