Retinal (retinaldehyde)
Evidence: Strong
A step stronger than retinol, gentler than prescription — collagen & turnover for lines and firmness.
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, is a member of the vitamin A (retinoid) family. It sits one metabolic step from retinoic acid, the active form your skin ultimately uses, which makes it more potent than retinol yet gentler than prescription tretinoin, a genuinely useful middle ground.
The evidence is strong. Decades of retinoid research, plus dedicated retinaldehyde studies, support improvements in fine lines, firmness, tone, texture and the appearance of pores through increased cell turnover and collagen support. Because it converts efficiently to retinoic acid, it tends to deliver visible results relatively quickly for a nonprescription option, and some data suggest useful antibacterial activity relevant to acne.
It is best for people targeting aging, texture and dullness who want more than retinol but are not on a prescription, and it suits normal, resilient and combination skin once tolerance is built. It maps to aging and texture concerns.
Layering matters. Introduce it slowly, a couple of nights a week, and pair it with barrier support such as ceramides, niacinamide, panthenol and peptides. Avoid stacking it in the same routine as strong exfoliating acids or benzoyl peroxide while your skin adapts, since that raises irritation; alternate nights instead. Daily broad-spectrum SPF is mandatory because retinoids increase sun sensitivity.
On safety, expect possible dryness, flaking and stinging during the adjustment period. Retinoids are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so avoid retinal in those situations. It is not a Malassezia feeder, though heavily occlusive retinal creams should be chosen with fungal-acne in mind. Patch test and confirm with your clinician.
⚠ Not during pregnancy; introduce slowly; SPF is mandatory
