Mandelic acid

Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived originally from bitter almonds. Its defining feature is a comparatively large molecule, which slows its penetration and makes it noticeably gentler than glycolic acid, and it carries mild antibacterial activity that adds to its usefulness on blemish-prone skin.
The evidence is moderate. Mandelic acid is documented to exfoliate and improve texture and tone with low irritation, and it is often highlighted for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly on deeper skin tones, precisely because its gentleness reduces the inflammation that can trigger new dark marks. It is a well-liked, tone-conscious acid, though studied less extensively than glycolic.
It is best for sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, and people of color who want exfoliation and pigment support with minimal risk of irritation-driven darkening. It maps to texture, dark-spot and sensitivity concerns.
Layering is friendly. Mandelic acid pairs well with niacinamide, azelaic acid and hydrators, and its mildness makes it a good first exfoliant. As with any acid, avoid combining it with retinoids or other strong exfoliants in the same session while your skin adjusts, and build frequency gradually. Daily SPF supports both exfoliation and pigment goals.
On safety, mandelic acid is one of the gentler AHAs, though it can still tingle and increase sun sensitivity, so sunscreen is important. It does not feed Malassezia. Topical AHAs like mandelic acid are generally considered acceptable during pregnancy, but the responsible step is to confirm your specific product with your clinician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
