Azelaic acid

In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic acid found naturally in grains such as wheat and barley and produced on skin by Malassezia yeast; cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades are made synthetically. It is an unusually versatile active, available over the counter at around 10 percent in K-beauty and by prescription at 15 to 20 percent.
The evidence is strong across several concerns. Clinical data support azelaic acid for rosacea-associated redness and bumps, for inflammatory and comedonal acne through antibacterial and pore-normalizing action, and for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma via inhibition of pigment production. Few single ingredients address redness, breakouts and dark marks together with this level of support.
It is best for people with rosacea-prone or sensitive-but-blemished skin, acne with dark marks, and uneven tone, including deeper skin tones where gentle pigment control matters. It maps to redness and rosacea-prone, acne and dark-spot concerns.
Layering is friendly: azelaic acid pairs well with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and gentle hydrators, and combines usefully with other pigment or acne treatments as tolerated. It has no strict chemical conflicts, though introducing it alongside strong exfoliants at once can compound tingling.
On safety, mild tingling, warmth or dryness in the first week or two is common and usually settles. It is typically fragrance-free and well tolerated. It does not feed Malassezia and is in fact often used in fungal-acne routines. It is one of the actives generally regarded as acceptable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which sets it apart from retinoids, but you should still confirm use with your clinician.
