Yuja (citrus)

Evidence: Emerging

Vitamin-C-rich Korean citrus for glow — bright, fresh, mild.

In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Yuja, known internationally as yuzu (Citrus junos), is an aromatic East Asian citrus fruit prized in Korea. In skincare its extract is used for a fresh, brightening quality, owing to natural vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds, and it lends products a bright, uplifting character. The evidence is emerging. Citrus extracts like yuja contain antioxidants including vitamin C, which supports a plausible brightening and antioxidant role, but the concentration and stability of vitamin C from fruit extract are generally lower and less reliable than from dedicated vitamin C actives, and dedicated clinical proof for yuja cosmetics is limited. It is best viewed as a pleasant, mild antioxidant-and-glow botanical rather than a potent brightener. It is best for people wanting a gentle, fresh brightening step and antioxidant support, particularly normal skin, with modest expectations. It maps to dullness and dark-spot concerns. Layering is easy. Yuja appears in toners, essences and masks and pairs well with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and other antioxidants. There are no notable chemical conflicts, and daily SPF supports any brightening goal. Safety warrants a citrus-specific note. Citrus extracts can sensitize very reactive skin, and citrus peel oils in particular can contain phototoxic compounds (furocoumarins), so well-formulated products and sun protection matter; fragranced citrus formulas may bother sensitive skin. It is not a recognized Malassezia feeder. No specific pregnancy concerns are documented for topical yuja extract, but given the citrus and fragrance considerations, patch test and confirm new products with your clinician if you have sensitive skin or are pregnant.
