Glycerin
Evidence: Strong
The most proven humectant in skincare, period. Boring, cheap, essential.
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Glycerin (glycerol) is the most thoroughly proven humectant in all of skincare, a small molecule that occurs naturally in skin lipids and is produced abundantly for cosmetic use. It draws water into the upper skin layers and helps hold it there, and it is inexpensive, stable and near-universally compatible, which is why it appears in a vast share of moisturizers.
The evidence is strong and long-established. Glycerin is documented not only to hydrate by attracting water but also to support the barrier, aid the skin's natural desquamation (healthy shedding), and interact with skin channels that regulate moisture. Few ingredients have as deep and consistent an evidence base for doing what they claim.
It is best for essentially every skin type, and it is a first-line choice for dehydration and dryness, including sensitive and oily skin that needs water without heaviness. It maps to dehydration and dryness concerns.
Layering is effortless. Glycerin combines with everything, works beautifully alongside hyaluronic acid and other humectants, and is happily sealed by a moisturizer or occlusive in dry conditions to lock in hydration. There are no conflicts.
On safety, glycerin is one of the gentlest, safest ingredients in cosmetics, typically fragrance-free, non-sensitizing and suitable for reactive skin, infants and compromised barriers. It does not feed Malassezia, so it is fully compatible with fungal-acne-prone routines. It is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Glycerin is the definition of a boring but essential ingredient: unglamorous, cheap and reliably effective, and a routine built on it as a base is on solid ground.
