Copper peptides center on GHK-Cu, a small peptide (glycyl-histidyl-lysine) bound to a copper ion that occurs naturally in the body and is produced synthetically for skincare. It has a devoted following for post-active recovery and firmness, based on its roles in wound healing, antioxidant defense and tissue signaling.
The evidence is emerging. GHK-Cu has interesting laboratory and some clinical data suggesting benefits for skin repair, firmness and the appearance of fine lines, but high-quality human studies in finished cosmetics remain limited, so enthusiasm should be tempered. It is a promising, well-liked ingredient whose deeper claims are still building their evidence base.
It is best for people focused on firmness, texture and recovery who want a gentle, reparative active, including skin that has been stressed by stronger treatments. It maps to aging and texture concerns.
Layering needs one specific caution. Copper peptides pair well with hydrators, niacinamide and ceramides, but they should not be combined in the same step with strong exfoliating acids or pure high-strength vitamin C, as those low-pH actives can disrupt the copper-peptide complex and reduce its effect; use them at different times of day or on alternate routines. This is the classic and legitimate copper-peptide layering rule.
On safety, GHK-Cu is generally well tolerated and typically fragrance-free, with low irritation potential. It does not feed Malassezia. Specific pregnancy data for topical copper peptides are limited, so the cautious position is to confirm with your clinician before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and to introduce it gradually with a patch test.
