Bakuchiol
Evidence: Emerging
Plant-derived retinol alternative with modest comparative data — for retinoid-averse or pregnancy-cautious users (confirm with your doctor).
In depth — how it works, who it's for, how to layer
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound (a meroterpene) isolated from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, known as babchi. It is marketed as a retinol alternative because, despite being chemically unrelated to vitamin A, it influences some of the same skin pathways associated with firmness and tone.
The evidence is emerging and should be described honestly. A frequently cited randomized trial found bakuchiol comparable to retinol for improving wrinkles and pigmentation with less irritation, but it was small, and the overall body of high-quality human data remains thin. It is fair to say bakuchiol shows promise as a gentler, retinoid-adjacent option, while acknowledging it is likely weaker than true retinoids and less proven.
It is best for people who are retinoid-averse, have easily irritated or sensitive skin, or want a lower-stimulation approach to early aging. It maps to aging and sensitivity concerns.
Layering is flexible and one of its selling points: bakuchiol does not carry the same photosensitivity as retinoids, tolerates daytime use, and pairs well with vitamin C, niacinamide, peptides and hyaluronic acid, with no strict conflicts. Daily SPF is still wise for any anti-aging routine.
On safety, purified bakuchiol is generally well tolerated. Note that the source plant contains furocoumarins (psoralens) associated with photosensitivity, though purified cosmetic bakuchiol should be free of them, so quality sourcing matters. It is not a known Malassezia feeder. On pregnancy, bakuchiol is often promoted as a pregnancy-safe alternative to retinoids, but the data are insufficient to confirm safety, so do not assume it is safe on that basis and confirm with your clinician before use.
⚠ Gentler but also weaker than true retinoids
